Stay Strong: As Nobody is Listening

…suffers me in green vines
as all of my being is fighting
all of my being is pleading
as soon as I know my threshold
has come, and devastated my conscious
breath with all those silent wishes
gripping to a tendency of faith
that I’ll still be here to cherish my longing
longer, to promise me tomorrow…?

your fence makes my bark ah howl louder
makes this caged world that you made me tamed
to believe in, salivating my bloody teeth youth
your mocking bird’s laughter makes my hind legs
stand, and eat you even when you command

don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Balloon Man

While waiting for the train
a hopeless demeanor draped
a dismay so dread
that I begged for atonement.

And relief came to be placed
inside bubbles, my childhood
was reflected in magenta rays.

A horizon that included all of us
It was no longer a blister
a globule of air anymore

But real.

Tabula Rasa

relinquished midnight
to your unrequited
howling moon
a cascading curse
pretending to covet
your bad choices
with promises
of a better tomorrow…

relinquished midnight
come sing for me
as my moon howls
a cascading curse
pretending to covet
my bad choices

with promises
of the sun rising
tomorrow my words
my words would
won’t remind you
of my pleasing smile
stained with an unrequited
emanation…

Cotton Candy

Catch me when
I’m not an awkward butterfly
lighting almost on the exhausted hibiscus
a weary comfort for a glimpse
an imprint on the fading sun

Catch me when
I’m not a bitter blue caged parrot
calling out for jack daniels like my owner
not owning a thing but a feathery bird

Catch me when my cliche is filled
jelly rolled happy joy, sunshine sprinkles
too consumed with sugary goodness of opposites.

Do parallels meet in the infinite demise of one?
Do we call them an equilibrium?
a  jelly roll, then a shot of jack?

Blood

everything is on automatic

no soul to spring a body erect
no blood blushing trouble
coming any minute now

and if you have soul
they’ll soon suck you
dry of  your daydreams.

The first dream I had tonight

falling asleep
so long

your hands can’t reach
groping darkness for miles

a dream where
a snake leaves teeth marks
miniature bumps
immediately blooming
with black holes for roots

so shocked by permeating fever
I was falling backwards
into a brown scorpion puddle
I heard my self yelp when stung.

everything is on automatic

no soul to spring a body erect
no blood blushing trouble
coming any minute now

and if you have soul
they’ll soon suck you
dry of  your daydreams.

Visitor

Harking up with joy, filled with so much food
we beggars can’t ask for more calloo, stewed chicken
macaroni pie, we can’t finish our plates, we just lie with
our bellies bobbing to the sky, as she pulls her skirt, and dance.

Catching the departure of her grace from my selfish grip
like a butterfly, thinking I caught her yes in hereafter
the steps to her highway reigns in all the places
that lingers in me, you feel her magic magnetized…

How I Became a Sucker

No one spoke to me in the dark
as I blindly walked alone
feeling for the comfort of fine

where all the anti-depressants
presses an invention of self
that everyone doubts

a fake smile slowly appeases
your eternal want of being pleased
when the magnitude of instability
reigns in my joker doubt

The Meaning Of Life and I.

I haven’t been posting as regularly as I use too… Things change, again and again, but anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to:

Broad Strokes 2012

It has been awhile since the last Broad Strokes broadcast… Broad Strokes is still alive and kicking it! In fact, there’s a show this Wednesday, February 29 at 8:00pm on Washington Heights Free Radio (WHFR). The first show for the year! And what better way to start your Broad Strokes listening off with a First Listen of new music.

This first show of Broad Strokes will test the waters of 2012, featuring new music by the band The Catskills. Presently, a nomad Americana band that you may have known as Object. Nomad, because after the release of Object’s EP, Tomorrowland, band members Eric Kramer and Maria Schettino decided to flee the out of control high stress, and accelerating rent of New York.

They freed themselves of their Brooklyn home, equipped with a practice and recording space, for the open air and more room to truly reflect. A reflection that translates a simplistic longing, that doesn’t beg for approval. Their music now, as Catskills, expresses the generosity that you’d find gripping you at night. Love exists between them, that a lone wolf wanders, and hopes to find in a howl.

Calypso Sally will be your conductor, as we travel and ask hard questions about putting out a record outside the Mecca of record making New York.

A Young Composer Dares Us To Listen.

With its complex guitar melodies, and thunderous drumming, Magnetic Island’s self-titled album has revolutionized the Riot Grrl sound of the 90s and taken it to higher heights. Because of the Riot Grrl movement we have such great women fronted bands like Magnetic Island, who thereupon help propel the genre further by fusing punk, experimental rock, etc. taking us deeper than simple chords and or fills.

Magnetic Island, under the direction of one of indie rocks best female guitarist, Lisa Liu shows her aptitude to not only play the guitar extremely well, but also demonstrates qualities of a brilliant composer.  This brilliance is manifested in part by the fact that Liu, a new comer to the drums, played all of the percussion parts for the album, in addition to guitar, vocals, bass and Rhodespiano.

The time is now, blaze the drums, but not in an overbearing manner, Liu’s drumming is clear and precise and works with each song, complimenting every accent of the guitar and vocals. A sense of equilibrium reigns throughout the album as each instrument is well arranged to benefit the overall sound. The songs are driven by the guitar and drums, with bandmate SMV’s vocals and undercurrent melodies on the keyboard. Nothing is accidental or by chance, and every layering of sound has a purpose, and successfully fulfills its positioning, making Magnetic Island one of the most well composed albums that will surely be a contender for best of 2012.

Dialectic Discoveries

“…the oppressed…exist in a dialectical relationship to the
oppressor, as his antithesis-that without them the oppressor could not
exist…The oppressed can over come this contradiction in which they
are caught only when this perception enlists them in struggle to free
themselves.” — Paulo Freire

endeavors

I wasted them
too much on You: an unspecified person or people in general
word phrases, such as “Fuck them”, even with good intentions
built on good things, I am afraid of losing, and I still want to hold onto, as is

diagrams, making a backlash blueprint, a deja vu
fully endorsed for You to fully forget the previous
a most cunning I, a most depleted but
where’s yours, where’s mine
reminiscent comet
ricocheting the earth’s surface
eclipsing the sun
burning with spinning promise
scattering cinders of hot bread
thoughts shattered across the hemisphere
where You, I, we live.

Suffering Silence

Because of these.
No, these…
that declared war on my native tongue.

I’ve been suffering the insufferable,
suffocated,
sullied,
sullen,
stunted.

Silenced of words to scream out that which submerge
for life savers to be thrown at my pleas.
Not knowing what to say has swallowed my delight.
All that remains is a bloated ill-figured shape.

To converse with the sensible is beyond exhaustion.
I’m a child again trying to talk in “big people’s business”,
stuck in between sentences with stuttering importance.

Gone mute now, a Carthusian monk’s vow is my tongue
I’m but a beggar for a point of view
some kind of vision that will help me escape
this state, where even grunting seems useless…

Encountering

That notebook holds my heart in its stem
That notebook holds love in its leaves
flicking a new chance on a page, I watch
every time, I watched her naked body
through the curtains of each misspellings
as I try to replicate her touch, her, her gaze
erase the words that doesn’t see the depths of her
a notebook heart, and I want to divulge
through my bloody blue ink everything
this leaf gives me, and I want to draw her
laughter so you too can be made exuberant
by her foliage, her dance of unknown syllables
that colors my dreams every night, and brings me
closer to possessing the fleeting secret of joyousness

THEY

Precious are days standing up straight like the stems from lilies
grooming, only to be asked to die unbroken by precarious ghosts.

Precious is anything that’s been a prism for the corners of escape
scapegoat pockets of leaking light, a hallway of nothingness, vanishing.

Precious is the sound of  await, longing a million years of drunkard youth
spoken through a crystal ball of “us” as a misnomer and the law caging “you.”

Precious is receiving letters and reading them in the stricken enlighten covers
of a slang, then it would be word of how it matters, while it can’t describe want.

A First Listen of Let Fall the Sparrow’s self titled EP

The gorgeous vocals, the bass with a voice of its own, the lonesome guitar that is perfect for winter, and the precise drumming makes you want to listen to Let Fall the Sparrow on repeat. I know I did. This post-punk trio elevates what it means to play an instrument, and also what it means to be a songbird.

The well balanced experimental structure of Let Fall the Sparrow‘s self titled EP makes you think differently about music today. If you ever stop playing the track, For Those Things That Are Past, you will feel exposed to a grandiose conviction that musicianship can mingle with raw passion. You wonder if is it now you will experience what it truly means to delve in the mist of composition… Composition that is unlike many of the bands today. Let Fall the Sparrow is clearly not beggars wanting to be listened to and validated, they’re about the negotiation of sound and how even in its chaotic sense can formulate a pattern, if one just listened carefully.

Broad Strokes with Calypso Sally on Washington Heights Free Radio (WHFR) will bring you a first listen segment of the band Let Fall the Sparrow‘s self titled debut. We will also have a chance to talk to the band’s bassist, Lilly Pritchard, live from San Francisco. So tune in next Wednesday, November 16 at 8:00pm.

Also, if you missed last month’s broadcast when Teletextile brought the house down to silence, completely (first time for everything), you’re still in luck, since you can listen to the broadcast HERE.
